Understanding DOF: degrees of freedom

DOF counts the independent axes a platform can move on. 2DOF gives pitch and roll — acceleration, braking and cornering lean. 3DOF adds yaw for rear-traction loss, which is what makes drift and oversteer readable. 4DOF adds heave for road bumps and kerb strikes. 6DOF adds surge and sway for full positional movement.

How many degrees of freedom do you actually need?

2DOF delivers the largest single jump in immersion because it adds the two forces you feel most. 3DOF is the sweet spot for sim racers who want to catch slides, since yaw tells you the rear is going before the visuals do. 4DOF and 6DOF are for maximum fidelity and commercial use.

What is the difference between a motion simulator and a bass shaker?

A bass shaker vibrates the seat in time with in-game audio and telemetry. A motion simulator physically repositions the platform using motors. Vibration adds texture; motion adds actual forces. Many rigs run both.

Do motion simulators work on PlayStation and Xbox?

Yes, with the DOF Reality MagicBox. It hosts the motion software itself and takes control input from a phone or tablet, so you can run motion on console without a gaming PC.

What is the difference between the H-series and P-series?

The H-series is built for home enthusiasts and supports up to roughly 150 to 170kg. The P-series is a reinforced, commercial-grade build rated to around 200kg and designed for high-torque direct drive wheels and continuous or public use.

What space and setup does a motion platform need?

Allow clearance around the platform for the full range of movement, not just its footprint. Transport wheel kits let you lift and roll a rig solo, and Cyber Covers enclose the moving parts if you have pets or children in the room.
